If you tell me what OG tags would fit for a series which Facebook supports, I can probably add them.
Facebook seems to not properly support music.song and the related music:album tags. Also it would not fit for videos where video.episode and video:series would probably be appropriate. But then Facebook doesn't seem to support those neither.
I could of course add article tags to series and speakers. If that helps.

Facebok already picks up the series name and description. All we would want is for it to pick up the series image in whatever way makes the most sense from the SermonSpeaker perspective.

If you have SermonSpeaker 4.4.6 installed, you can try the files in the attached zip.
You need to extract it and manually copy the content to /components/com_sermonspeaker/. Keep the paths in the zipfile and it should work.
You can of course also wait for the next release (probably next month).

I uploaded the files. I see the "og:" tags in the updated files, but when I go to a series or sermon page on the site, none appear in that page's code and no image appears in FB.

Do you have an appid or admin id set on the options? The og tags are only shown if either of those is set.
