Support for SermonSpeaker 5.x is in bugfix mode only, the same as it is for Joomla 3.10.
I will not add any new features to this releases.
Please upgrade to SermonSpeaker 6.x and Joomla 4.x, which is better anyway.

Hi Thomas
My S/S was working fine until this last update - now like some others here I'm getting a similar error 1054.

Mine states: 1054 Unknown column 'name' in 'field list' SQL=SELECT id, name as title, intro as tooltip, pic, CASE WHEN CHAR_LENGTH(alias) THEN CONCAT_WS(':', id, alias) ELSE id END as slug, 1 as level FROM *****_sermon_speakers WHERE state = 1 ORDER BY name ASC

I've ensured that ALL (to my knowledge) related extensions are installed, cleared caches, repaired the database, & checked settings etc but still can't figure where it's coming from.

(Test) Website is at BMC Services Online

Trying to get this site live by the end of the week so really need to figure this out. I've another unrelated issue but will open up a separate post for it. Thanks. Romayne

Most likely it's an outdated module. Check that you have the latest versions of all SermonSpeaker modules installed.
If the Joomla Updater doesn't show you one, try disabling the modules and see if the error goes away. If you got the faulty module, check manually in the download section here for the latest version. Sometimes the Joomla Update Manager acts a bit funny and doesn't show you an update.

Thanks for your help Thomas - sadly while I've now fixed the problem - I discovered it was actually the component/package thyat was outdated - I've obviously missed some vital info somewhere along the way on how to upgrade SS along with Joomla from 2.5 to 3.x as this last update seems to have nicely deleted everything during its install - so I'm left with no categories or sermons etc.

Now, I did save the respective 4 database keys (scriptures, series, sermons, speakers) they're presumably for the older version & so I'm wondering if I've any way of retrieving the info or otherwise getting back to where I was previously??

At the time I was doing the J3.3 upgrade I opted to just disable S/S rather than uninstalling it, so was quite pleased when I discovered it had migrated nicely other than having that one error. Now I seem to have given myself a bigger headache perhaps?

Hopefully you've some encouragement for me? Thanks.

Updating from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x is simple. You just have to make sure you have the latest version of SermonSpeaker installed before you update your Joomla. www.sermonspeaker.net/download.html shows the latest SermonSpeaker version for each Joomla version. For Joomla 2.5 that would be SermonSpeaker 4.5.8.
If you have that one installed, it will work fine both in J2.5 and J3.

After you have updated your Joomla, you will be shown a new update for SermonSpeaker, which is SermonSpeaker 5.2.3. Installing that will update all your database to the latest version without loosing any data.

Since you have the old tables, you can recover your data from there. For that you follow this steps:
  1. Uninstall SermonSpeaker
  2. Install the old version of SermonSpeaker
  3. Copy the database tables over the existing ones
  4. Update to the new version of SermonSpeaker. It should detect the tables and migrate them.

Ok Thomas - getting there but run into another problem.
Basically I did as you suggested - uninstalled the 5 version & cleared out caches etc. Then installed the 4.5.8 component with 4.5.0 modules for Latest Sermons etc. Once that was done, I removed the blank tables & replaced them with the previously saved ones for scriptures, series, sermons, sermon tags, speakers & tags.

Thought everything was grand as sure enough all the speakers & sermons were there BUT no categories. Easy sorted as I'd only 1 category of any real importance. So put that in, but then discovered that none of the speakers were connecting to it, & all of the sermons are showing as uncategorised :(. I couldn't see any mention of categories in the database.

However, even updating the categories hasn't sorted the problems out completely - I've managed to get the speakers showing on the front end but not their sermons (for the few I've manually fixed). Feel like I'm at danger of fixing this until it's more broke than when I started :( :S

What am I missing? Is there an easy way to get them all registered to the category or am I going to have to do this all manually? Or did I miss something in the reinstall?

Once I get this version working fully then I can move on to upgrading again. :)

The categories are stored in a Joomla table (#__categories). SermonSpeaker just uses an API from Joomla there.
The id of that tables row is stored in the SermonSpeaker tables in the "catid" column.

So you could adjust the value in that column directly in the database, however I'd suggest you use the batch functions in the SermonSpeaker backend. This allows you to move all selected sermons, speakers or series into the selected category in one go. That can be done within 5 minutes from there :)

Make sure all sermons, series and speakers have a valid category assigned. Otherwise they may not show up because of missing permissions. SermonSpeaker handles all permissions based on the category and if the category isn't valid, it will refuse to show the sermon (or speaker or series).
