Support for SermonSpeaker 5.x is in bugfix mode only, the same as it is for Joomla 3.10.
I will not add any new features to this releases.
Please upgrade to SermonSpeaker 6.x and Joomla 4.x, which is better anyway.

Is there a way to add another format to the sermon dates? YYYY-MM-DD is the only short version. I would prefer it to be MM-DD-YYYY. Can i add that myself?

SermonSpeaker uses the date formats specified in your language files. The options you get depend on the active language.
You can create overrides for those in the language manager. But those overrides would be globally, not for SermonSpeaker only.
The language keys are the following ones (en-GB in this case):
DATE_FORMAT_LC="l, d F Y"
DATE_FORMAT_LC1="l, d F Y"
DATE_FORMAT_LC2="l, d F Y H:i"
DATE_FORMAT_LC3="d F Y"
DATE_FORMAT_LC4="Y-m-d"
