Support for SermonSpeaker 5.x is in bugfix mode only, the same as it is for Joomla 3.10.
I will not add any new features to this releases.
Please upgrade to SermonSpeaker 6.x and Joomla 4.x, which is better anyway.

Storage options

IIRC, SS used to have a number of other options for external storage already configured. I really have no clue how to set up the external storage manually, and S3 is so cheap, I push clients that way.

However, I've just run into a major issue with S3. Because it store "objects" as opposed to "files" (I didn't figure that out, I just stole it from a post!!) when you upload old files (like if you're migrating past years of sermons) EVERYTHING is tagged with today's date. I'm uploading sermons from 2014 to the present.

While this is not an issue for sermons uploaded weekly, it creates a mess (on S3) when you bulk upload years worth of sermons.

Am I correct remembering there were other options available and, if so, why were they removed? Too much to support?

I didn't remove any option :)
You can use "default", which would be locally on the webserver itself. "Amazon S3" and for video also "Vimeo".
There is additionally also the option to use a generic "External Server". But that one needs a custom script to work.
There is also the Google Picker which allows you to pick Youtube videos and Google Doc files. But that doesn't work for audio due to the way Google handles audio files.

OK. I think the last time I used SS was for videos which does have, as you mention, the extra option of Vimeo.

I'll just stick with S3 as it's still the cheapest option for storage. And the issue is only for past file uploads. As new ones are uploaded, of course, the object is dated the same (or near to) the modified date of the file.

Cheers
