Support for SermonSpeaker 5.x is in bugfix mode only, the same as it is for Joomla 3.10.
I will not add any new features to this releases.
Please upgrade to SermonSpeaker 6.x and Joomla 4.x, which is better anyway.

On a fresh installation, whenever I try to upload an audio file for a sermon I get and "Upload Error: 403"

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to resolve this?

Error 403 means "Forbidden". See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_403

You can have a look at the server error log to see additional details.
