Support for SermonSpeaker 4.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 2.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 5.x and Joomla 3.x, which is better anyway.

Any idea why the page navigation is showing up in a vertical manner? I have tried template edits and other css changes, to no avail. Here is a screenshot from the All Sermons list.

Hard to guess from a screenshot. But it's using a Joomla function to do that and the formatting should be done by the Site template.
Is the pagination working in content items (eg category list)?

get development tool bar for IE. its one of the best tools out there, that can tell you what is causing issues with CSS, you can turn off sertain styles to see if they are affecting page layout. another one firebug for Firefox, but i've noticed this one is lacking in CSS area.
