Support for SermonSpeaker 4.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 2.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 5.x and Joomla 3.x, which is better anyway.

After moving our church site to a new server the player on the details page no longer works - just expands and comes up with Connecting...
The JW players (sermon list page and player pop-up) work fine as does the download.
Using the latest version

This sounds quite similar to your issue, even if it's two year old. You can try the solution suggested there and disable gzip compression for mp3 files. Maybe this helps.

To do so you add this line into your .htaccess file:
