Support for SermonSpeaker 4.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 2.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 5.x and Joomla 3.x, which is better anyway.

The dropdown list contains the categories not the series.
The idea is that you can filter the list by the categories assigned to series, speakers or sermons by choosing the corresponding category.

"Root" is a special case and means there will be no filtering at all, showing all sermons.

If this listbox only contains "root", that means you haven't defined any categories yet in SermonSpeaker.
