Support for SermonSpeaker 4.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 2.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 5.x and Joomla 3.x, which is better anyway.

i deleted the doctored one and reinstated the plain one
(and for some reason im not getting response alerts from here- my issue)

Response alerts should work after you subscribed to a thread or category. At least it is set to work in the forum settings.
As an admin, I get the alerts anyway

I just tried the changes on my test server and it seems to work. You can try the attached router.php. Extract it and overwrite yours in /components/com_sermonspeaker/router.php.
