Support for SermonSpeaker 3.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 1.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 4.x, which is better anyway.

When I try the upload from the front end with a small file, everything seems to work fine, but if I try to upload a large file (14 Mb), I get a message that the "connection has been lost."

Is that likely to be a problem with my hosting service, my browser, my ISP or what?

Most likely related to a memory limit or timeout setting in the php.ini I guess. But I'm not a server guy. The error log from the webserver should tell you what it is. So the hoster should be able to see the source.
