Support for SermonSpeaker 3.x is canceled as it is for Joomla 1.5. I will gladly assist you with minor issues but I will not fix any bugs anymore in this releases.
The fix is to upgrade to SermonSpeaker 4.x, which is better anyway.

It's true that the time field is passed to the player. Maybe this can be improved if no time is entered. Will have to look into this.

In the backend, you should also be able to use the ID3 Tag lookup button. This should read the length from the file and fill it into the respective field. However I think it will only fill out the fields which have no values saved yet.
The frontend uploader also should read out those tags and prefill it I think. Even if no ID3 tags are set, the time should hopefully always be read
